Triston Casas did not participate in team drills during the Red Sox ’ first full squad workout Sunday at JetBlue Park.
The first baseman has been doing drills on his own, but has yet to be cleared as he continues to rehab from a ruptured patellar tendon suffered last May.
“As of right now, I haven’t had the clearance to get out there and participate with the group, but I will take ground balls and continue to hit at my own pace, without the structure of being in a team workout,” Casas told MLB.com’s Ian Browne in Fort Myers .
Casas has spent the last four seasons with the Red Sox . He was limited to just 29 games last year due to his knee injury, and played just 63 games in 2024 after a rib cartilage injury kept him sidelined for a majority of the year.
Between his injury history and the limited power at the plate during his time in Boston , the team did not commit to Casas as its first baseman in 2026 . Weeks after the comments, the Red Sox traded for veteran Willson Contreras .
Despite the recovery being long, Casas said being patient isn’t hard.
“This was a major injury and I’m a great player, and I don’t find any reason to rush this process,” he told Browne . “And whenever I feel ready to come back is when I am going to contribute best.”
Where Casas plays when he’s 100% healthy remains in question with Contreras slated to be the full-time first baseman and the designated hitter spot likely to be a rotating cast of outfielders.
But the 26-year-old remains confident that he can contribute once he’s back to full health.
“When I’m healthy, I fit on any team,” Casas said .
