Selection tells you plenty about a manager. It tells you who he trusts, who he thinks can handle the heat, and who has earned the right to play when the stakes rise. Ahead of Liverpool's meeting with Arsenal, Andoni Iraola has a midfield decision to make, and it is one that says plenty about where Trey Nyoni and Ryan Gravenberch stand.
Nyoni did himself no harm at all in the win over Chelsea. In fact, he looked sharper and more assured than Gravenberch, and that is not a throwaway line. The youngster brought energy, purpose and a bit of authority, which is no small thing when you are trying to force your way into a side chasing a result in a big game.
Gravenberch, meanwhile, had another night that raised questions. He gave away a poor penalty, then failed from the spot himself in the shootout. For a player trying to steady his place, those moments linger. Midfield is where games are settled, and there is little room for drift or doubt there.
Even so, Iraola has made it clear that he is not turning his back on the Dutchman. "I think as you said, he's had better games this season, worse games," said the Liverpool head coach. "Lately he's playing a lot, a lot of minutes and has also played very good games recently. We trust him, we know what he can produce. Like with other players when they don't play well we try to help him improve the things I think he can improve and when he's in a good place try to keep him there."
That is a manager offering support in public, which matters. There is no point hanging a player out to dry before a game of this magnitude. Yet support does not remove pressure. If anything, it sharpens it. Gravenberch knows he has a teenager breathing down his neck, and he knows Liverpool need more certainty in the middle of the pitch against an Arsenal side that will test every loose touch and every lapse in concentration.

The other factor in all this is Dominik Szoboszlai. If he is fit enough, the debate changes. Iraola offered a cautious update when asked about his availability, and Victor Munoz too. "I think they have a chance, they have a chance," he said. "But I don't know for sure if they will be involved or not, but we still have two days, so there is a chance, yes."
That sounds like a door left open rather than a promise. Liverpool will not want to rush Szoboszlai if there is any doubt, especially after getting that wrong before. So this may come down to trust versus form, experience versus momentum. Nyoni has made his case. Gravenberch still has the manager's backing. Sunday will show which counts for more.
