The Clemson Tigers looked like they'd be neck and neck with Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide as college football's dominant programs not so long ago. However, Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney has struggled to adapt to the NIL/ transfer portal era, and Clemson hasn't made a serious title run in several seasons.
The Tigers are 5-3 so far this year, and barring a miracle, are once again out of the running for the College Football Playoff and a national championship. Although the last several seasons haven't gone as well as Swinney would've hoped, he's still happy with how consistent the program has been under him.
"I'm proud of our team," Swinney told reporters Tuesday, per The State's Chapel Fowler. "We're consistent in a lot of ways. We're not perfect, but we're consistent."
"We're trying to get a sixth win," Swinney added. "Nobody sets out to have six wins, and you say that's a pretty low bar. And it is, in totality. But you talk about consistency? If we could get a sixth win, that would be 27 years in a row for Clemson."
Swinney, who has won two titles at Clemson, noted that hte only programs that have matched that consistency are Georgia, Ohio State, and Oklahoma.
"Consistency beats intensity," he said. "I think consistency is a very underrated thing," Swinney said. "It's something I talk about with my team all the time. You can take 10,000 gallons of water and dump it on a rock, and it's just a big ol' splash. But if you let it just drip every day, it will wear a hole in that long. So having consistency in your program, in everything that you do, creates longevity."
The Tigers opened the season with a 51-10 loss to the LSU Tigers, but have looked better since. On Saturday, Clemson will face Syracuse as Swinney seeks his vaunted sixth win.
