The Tulsa Golden Hurricane started off a bit hotter than the Tulane Green Wave did this season but have come a bit back down to earth as the teams await a clash in Week 10 for the Green Wave's Homecoming.
For one, the Golden Hurricane were one of the rare Group of Six programs to knock off a Power Four opponent this season in non-conference play, as they defeated the Eric Morris-led Oklahoma State Cowboys and quarterback Drew Mestemaker, who came over with the majority of the offense from the North Texas Mean Green last season.
Tulsa rode a high until losing to the Arkansas Razorbacks in their final non-conference game before going 1-3 in conference play.
It's not too dissimilar from Tulane as of a week ago with a 1-2 conference slate but losses to both Power Four teams they faced on the road.
Something that stuck out in their win over the Memphis Tigers was that they challenged themselves in non-conference play much more than the Tigers, and that seemed to play into the Green Wave's competitive nature in that game.
The Golden Hurricane put themselves to the test just as much Tulane did before entering their American slate.
Tulsa then went 1-3 in the American with a win over the Rice Owls, who the Green Wave face after this weekend, and losses to the North Texas Mean Green, Navy Midshipmen, and, much like the Wave, the Army Black Knights, who beat the Golden Hurricane on a last second field goal.
They lost a close one to the Mean Green as well, and this won't be an easy win for the Green Wave here in Week 10.
In addition to that, it'll be the second week in a row in which a team is coming off their bye week. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the program.
Tulane is decidedly beat up after their road game on Friday against the Charlotte 49ers , who didn't appear to have much rust coming off of their bye week. The Wave will have to hope the Golden Hurricane look a bit more sluggish with their heightened competition level.
But this will be a better test for the Wave than last weekend. They didn't get many brownie points for an overtime win over Charlotte, but what's important now is for them to build off of the key traits they showed in the end of that matchup and carry it over to Homecoming.
