During Tuesday's press conference , head coach Will Hallmentioned a running back's injury that had occurred on Friday.
His update on the back's injury gives us an idea on how it'll affect the running back room, and how it'll hurt Tulane.
After being the go-to guy last year, Jamauri McClure hoped to continue that momentum, but unfortunately, he was the running back who injured his ankle, and it looks like he'll be missing some time.
"He'll be back sooner rather than later," coach Hall said optimistically, "in the early part of the season (maybe). Will that be game one? We're not 100% sure."
McClure was the potential RB1 of this group, hoping to continue the efficient snowball that he had built last year. Overall, this injury is hopefully just a minor setback for what will be a great year for the Greenie.
Regardless of whether McClure will be ready to play by week one, Tulane will be eager to have him back, but they won't necessarily be hurting.
Like we've said before at On SI Tulane, this running back room is one of the most dynamic, versatile, and deepest rooms we've seen Tulane have.
Although TU may have lost McClure for a bit, Maurice "Mo" Turner, who missed most of last year, will likely take his place at the RB1 spot, and his strong bowling ball style of running make him hard to bring down.
Turner can split tackles with ease and has the strength to break through any outstretched nose tackle's arm. The good thing about this room is that you have different tools for different things, which brings us to Jaylin Lucasand Johnnie Daniels.
These two transfers hail from Florida State and Mississippi State, respectively, and they bring a flare to this offense that gives it the capability to explode on any given play.
Lucas presents that pass-catching style of back that can do just about anything. Take handoffs out of the back field, catch passes out of the backfield, line up in the slot, or line up out wide, Lucas has the skill set to do all of the above.
We haven't even touched on his special teams pedigree, which is what he was known for at his first school of choice out of high school, Indiana, where was a first-team All-American.
Coming in right after him is Hail State transfer, Johnnie Daniels. Daniels has done nothing but impress us since the start of Fall camp. Whether he's taking a 30-yard run to the house or he's fighting through two defenders to reach the goal line, Daniels is the type of guy you want, especially in third down and goal line situations.
He's deceptively strong and runs with tremendous force. This pair of backs is strong enough, and these guys are whoare backing up Mo Turner.
All in all, coach Hall remains optimistic in seeing Jamauri McClure back early in the season. Whether it'll be week one or beyond, we're not sure, but stay tuned for more updates.
