Minnesota Twins fans were forced to hold their breath after ace Joe Ryan left his most recent start after just nine pitches . However now, they’ll be able to breathe a sigh of relief.
Ryan’s MRI showed no structural damage , via Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul. He was able to play catch on Tuesday and will throw a bullpen on Wednesday barring any setbacks.
The right-hander was battling elbow soreness when he was lifted from his start. The Twins are going to be extremely cautious dealing with an injury of that nature. Still, if Ryan is able to get through his bullpen session unscathed, he’d have a quicker path to a return.
Minnesota won’t rush things though, sitting at 15-20 though. When healthy, they know Ryan is their best pitcher both in the rotation or as a trade chip . Early in the year, they want the righty past his elbow issues before making another start.
When he does return to the mound, Ryan will be looking to build off of the 3.72 ERA and 40/10 K/BB ratio he has produced through his first eight games. He has a tough act to follow, as Ryan made the All-Star team for the first time in 2025 with a 3.42 ERA and a 194/39 K/BB ratio. When healthy though, the right-hander continued his dominating ways.
As the Twins continue building towards the future, Ryan will continue hearing his name in trade rumors. However, whether it’s for Minnesota or elsewhere, the righty needs to be on the mound to provide maximum value. The Twins will hope a clean bullpen session leads to a prompt return plan.
