The Denver Broncos had a 7-0 lead over the New England Patriots in the second quarter of the AFC Championship game on Sunday when they faced 4th-and-1 at New England 's 14-yard line.
Instead of attempting a short field goal to take a 10-0 lead, Broncos coach Payton opted to go for it after taking a timeout. Payton's play call — perhaps even moreso than his decision to go for it — has received criticism from fans and pundits after Denver failed to pick up a first down.
Stidham rolled out, faced heavy pressure and nearly threw an interception. The pass ultimately fell incomplete and the Broncos turned the ball over on downs. Payton's decision received backlash on Twitter/X, both when it happened and as the game wrapped up.
New England only managed to score 10 points, so had Denver converted a field goal on that 4th-and-1, the game could have gone into overtime. Instead, the Broncos lost 10-7 , and the Patriots are now headed to the Super Bowl. That fourth-down decision might now haunt Denver for the next eight months.
