The Trojans defeated UNLV 100-68, while the top-ranked Gamecocks survived Maryland 101-93. Both powerhouse programs welcomed important returning players, but their opening performances revealed different strengths and weaknesses.
Southern California established an incredibly high standard by executing a clinical offensive performance on Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, the top-ranked program in the land had to survive a surprisingly ferocious second-half challenge across the ocean. These contrasting opening games provide a fascinating analytical lens into how both coaching staffs will manage their loaded rosters going forward. True national title contenders must learn to balance individual star power with overall team chemistry.
The sudden pressure to perform at an elite level can easily overwhelm a less experienced roster early in the year. Fans are already witnessing the immediate tactical adjustments and high-scoring showcases unfolding across women's college basketball. These initial outcomes prove that the path to cutting down the nets in April will feature immense competitive adversity. Hardwood purists are fully prepared for a highly competitive regular season.

National championship expectations can place a massive psychological burden on young athletes before conference play even begins. The intense spotlight surrounding USC and South Carolina women's basketball rosters creates a highly competitive atmosphere for opposing defensive units. Both historic programs took completely different strategic paths to secure their highly anticipated opening victories. These diverse tactical styles will undoubtedly influence the competitive hierarchy of the entire collegiate landscape.
Franchise history proves that returning from major physical injuries requires an immense amount of mental fortitude and patience. Coaches must carefully balance individual workloads while simultaneously trying to integrate fresh high school recruits into the system. The opening double-header provided a pristine showcase of elite athletic mastery and high-stakes sideline management. Supporters now have plenty to debate about the long-term implications of these non-conference results.
The highly anticipated return of one of the country's most dynamic scorers completely electrified the local fan base. JuJu Watkins stepped onto the court after 588 days away from regulation college basketball following her torn ACL . She immediately commanded attention by registering an impressive 21-point performance against UNLV. The spectacular showcase confirmed that her scoring ability remains an important weapon for the Trojans.
Watkins finished 9-of-22 from the field but struggled from beyond the arc, missing all five three-point attempts. She also contributed five rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block in her return. Although her shooting efficiency leaves room for improvement, her ability to produce 21 points provides an encouraging starting point. Her presence also creates additional offensive opportunities for teammates who benefit from the defensive attention she attracts.

Relying entirely on a single perimeter option can sabotage a program during the high-stakes environment of the tournament. Fortunately, the Trojan coaching staff surrounded their centerpiece with a spectacular mixture of proven veteran depth and dynamic youth. Jazzy Davidson instantly validated the heavy preseason hype by executing several smooth midrange jumpers during crucial possessions. The versatile player proved that she can effortlessly function as a primary option when defenses overextend.
Davidson finished with 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting, while elite freshman standout Saniyah Hall contributed 22 points in her collegiate debut. Hall shot 7-of-8 from the field and connected on three of her four three-point attempts. A total of five players finished the afternoon in double figures to secure a highly convincing victory. USC also shot 58.8% from the field, demonstrating how efficiently its offensive weapons converted scoring opportunities.
The top-ranked team in the nation launched its historic title defense across the globe in spectacular fashion. Ashlyn Watkins made her highly anticipated return to the hardwood to provide an elite physical presence inside the paint. She immediately anchored the interior rotation by securing an outstanding 10 rebounds against a highly aggressive frontcourt. The six-foot-three forward reminded the entire country why her elite rim protection alters game plans.
Watkins added two emphatic blocked shots to disrupt the offensive rhythm of the opposing perimeter players completely. Her defensive anchoring gives the premier guards another layer of protection when opponents attack the paint. The versatile junior accepted a specialized reserve role to solidify the baseline depth for the loaded roster. This selfless approach demonstrates the incredible culture established within the elite southeastern program.
South Carolina also received significant offensive production from its other contributors throughout the matchup. Joyce Edwards led the Gamecocks with 23 points, while Agot Makeer added a career-high 20 points. Tessa Johnson and Jerzy Robinson each contributed 15 points, giving South Carolina five players in double figures. That scoring depth helped the Gamecocks survive Maryland's late push.

Maintaining a high level of defensive intensity across 40 complete minutes remains a significant challenge for any roster. Head coach Dawn Staley watched her premier squad encounter a ferocious second-half challenge from a determined opponent. Maryland executed an impressive offensive comeback that exposed some sudden communication lapses within the secondary defensive units. The unexpected pressure forced the top-ranked team to rely heavily on veteran execution to secure the win.
The Gamecocks entered halftime with a commanding 61-33 advantage, but allowed Maryland to outscore them 60-40 afterward. Addi Mack finished with a career-high 35 points , including 31 after halftime, to lead the Terrapins' comeback attempt. Maryland eventually cut the deficit to six points with less than a minute remaining. While South Carolina secured the victory, surrendering such a substantial lead exposes a defensive concern that cannot be ignored.
Maintaining that defensive intensity will become increasingly important as the grueling schedule progresses. The Gamecocks cannot afford to surrender significant advantages against elite SEC competition down the road. While a gritty opening victory is valuable, the defensive lapses require immediate attention during film review. The coaching staff has an opportunity to use this challenging footage to reinforce better accountability during practice sessions.
The rapidly moving regular-season calendar offers absolutely no rest for these elite national championship contenders. Southern California will return to its home court to host Utah State on November 8 at the Galen Center. The matchup provides a perfect tactical opportunity to refine offensive spacing and build deeper rotation chemistry. Fans are eager to see if the high-scoring unit can maintain its impressive shooting efficiency.
The competitive stakes will climb even higher for the top-ranked Gamecocks during their next high-profile neutral-site showcase. South Carolina faces No. 12 North Carolina in the Ally Tipoff in Charlotte on November 8. This matchup will test their interior depth and force better defensive consistency over four quarters. Securing consecutive high-profile victories would send a thunderous message to the rest of the women's basketball landscape.

The sheer depth of the modern collegiate landscape ensures that every single matchup remains mandatory viewing.
Both national powers have successfully demonstrated that their championship windows are completely open for business this winter. The Trojans possess an unstoppable multi-headed offensive monster that can effortlessly score against any standard zone defense. The Gamecocks retain a strong defensive identity, but their performance against Maryland showed that consistency remains essential.
