The 2026 World Cup continues as we get another treat on Wednesday night. The USMNT will host Bosnia in Santa Clara for what will be one of the biggest matches in the history of Team USA.
The last time the Americans were in this position with elimination on the line, they lost to the Netherlands four years ago in the Round of 16. Before that, they lost to Belgium in 2014 in the Round of 16. The USMNT has not gotten past that round since 2002, but has an opportunity at redemption if they can get past Bosnia on Wednesday night.
The USMNT won Group D after defeating Paraguay and Australia with ease. They would go on to lose to Turkiye in a meaningless contest, as a majority of the star talent was resting. Now fully prepared for this match, the USMNT should put on a show in front of their home fans.
Bosnia will not be an easy out, as they have played well this tournament, especially on the defensive end. Finishing third in Group B with only a -1 goal difference is not something to be upset about. They advanced with results of beating Qatar and drawing with Canada . Bosnia has scored five goals and allowed a total of six in these games so far. As for the Americans, they have scored eight and allowed four.

Why the USMNT Could Win
The key for the Americans will be to play with pace and create chance after chance. They have been successful at scoring goals quickly, with three in under 11 minutes in each of the three group stage games. The USMNT will aim to control possession with width, as Bosnia will play a much more compact style, trying to avoid great looks from the U.S.
Christian Pulisic , Sergio Dest, Malik Tillman , and Weston McKennie must be at the top of their game, setting up Folarin Balogun with chances near the net.
Pulisic is very good at unlocking a defense and generating chances in transition. If Pulisic gets isolated 1v1 and can cut inside, that's where the U.S. can break the game open. Bosnia tends to defend compact and protect central areas, so Pulisic's ability to draw two defenders and slip runners through becomes huge.
McKennie's job is winning second balls, arriving late into the box, and stopping Bosnia from launching counters. If he dominates physically, the U.S. spends most of the night attacking instead of scrambling back.
Why Bosnia Could Win
Edin Džeko is the player to watch for Bosnia. Džeko isn't just a finisher; Bosnia uses him to hold the ball up, bring midfielders in, and attack crosses. At 40-years-old, he doesn't have the juice he once had. However, he can still make a serious impact. The Bosnians will need his experience on Wednesday night.
Ermin Mahmic has two goals in this tournament, leading the team in only two matches played. Kerim Alajbegovic and Jovo Lukic have also scored. This game plan won't be about scoring many goals. If Bosnia can keep this a 1-1 game heading into penalty kicks, then they have the Americans right where they want them. Both Germany and the Netherlands have lost in PKs in the last two days. Bosnia knows they likely won't win this game in regulation time. If they did, then that would likely say more about the Americans.
Bosnia can win this game if they punish the mistakes made by the U.S. with an extremely tough defense.
Final USA-Bosnia Prediction & Pick
The final prediction for this matchup will be seeing the USMNT go through. They should win this game in regulation time and avoid any needed extra time. Bosnia should score one goal, but the USA will get at least two and win this contest in 90 minutes.
Final USA-Bosnia Prediction & Pick: USA 3-Way ML (-270), Under 3.5 goals (-172)
