Before Saturday, USC went 17 years without a player being selected in the first round of the MLB Draft. The last player to do that from USC was Grant Green, who was drafted by the Athletics with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft.
Left-handed pitcher Mason Edwards was projected to end that drought for the Trojans during the 2026 MLB Draft. However, Edwards ultimately fell just short of the first-round.
The Athletics drafted Edwards with the No. 47 pick, which was the eighth pick in the second round of the 2026 MLB Draft.

Edwards' Career at USC
Edwards played all three seasons of his collegiate career with the Trojans. Coming out of Palisades Charter HS in Los Angeles , Edwards was not included in future potential first-round pick conversations.
During his career at USC, he developed into a superstar pitcher for the Trojans. He finished his career as the Big Ten single-season strikeout leader with 113 in conference play and led the conference and nation with 169 total strikeouts this season.
His 2.07 ERA was also the best in the Big Ten and ranked fifth overall in the nation in 2026. Edwards was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and a First-Team All-Big Ten selection for his performance this season.
