The sudden end of Chad Baker-Mazara 's time at USC raised questions months before the former guard took the matter to court. Now, those questions have turned into a legal fight involving the player, the university and head coach Eric Musselman .
Baker-Mazara filed a lawsuit against USC and Musselman in Los Angeles County Superior Court on September 14, according to reporting first published by the California Post . The filing accuses the coach of an alleged locker-room tirade following a loss to Nebraska and also challenges the way the school handled Baker-Mazara's NIL agreements.
Chad Baker-Mazara's USC Exit Comes Under A Microscope
The lawsuit centers on what allegedly happened after USC lost 82-67 to Nebraska on February 28. Baker-Mazara had been one of the Trojans' leading players and exited the game after suffering an injury, before the confrontation described in the complaint allegedly took place in the locker room.

According to the lawsuit, Musselman became angry with Baker-Mazara after the player tried to address his teammates. The complaint alleges that the coach then directed profanity toward Baker-Mazara before telling him to return to the Dominican Republic, a statement the lawsuit characterizes as an attack on his national origin and Dominican heritage.
The complaint says, "Coach Musselman's outburst was a direct attack on Baker-Mazara's national origin and Dominican heritage." Those claims are allegations in an active lawsuit and have not been established in court.

Baker-Mazara was dismissed from the program the following day. He later told USA Today that the departure was hurtful and said he believed his relationship with Musselman had been strong enough that he should not have been removed from the team.
Eric Musselman And USC Face NIL Claims Too
The lawsuit goes beyond the alleged locker-room incident. Baker-Mazara also claims USC failed to make an NIL payment and later moved to terminate his agreements by invoking a morals clause after his dismissal.
He is seeking damages through claims including breach of contract, conversion and intentional interference with prospective economic advantage. The filing also alleges that the fallout damaged his NBA draft stock and cost him other professional opportunities.
USC has rejected the allegations' racial aspect and defended its decision to remove Baker-Mazara from the roster. "The decision to remove the student-athlete from the men's basketball roster was based on a number of considerations, none having to do with race," the university said, adding that it expects to defeat the case in court.
Baker-Mazara's lawsuit now puts a highly disputed ending to his USC career into the legal system. What happened inside that locker room and how the university handled his NIL agreements afterward will ultimately have to be sorted out in the case.
