Flau'jae Johnson's time with the Golden State Valkyries ended before it even began after the team traded her to the Seattle Storm just a few moments after being drafted as the eighth overall pick on Monday.
The Valkyries made Johnson their first selection of this year's WNBA Draft after her stellar career at LSU, including winning a national title in 2023. The squad, however, shipped her to the Storm for 16th overall pick Marta Suarez and a second-round pick in 2028.
The move left many scratching their heads. Golden State general manager Ohemaa Nyanin, however, maintained that it was a logical decision, although she refused to divulge more , as reported by ClutchPoints' Kenzo Fukuda.
"When I'm ready to speak more about what the strategy is behind it, I'll speak on it," said Nyanin.
"I don't really speak about my strategy publicly because other teams are watching."
Fans were not too nice to Nyanin after finding out her explanation.
"The plan was there was no plan," said @ChiSportsGuy8.
"They knew she (Johnson) was the best available on the board and made a business move to get—Marta," added @whereisdw.
"Stupid @valkyries lost all draft capital, not gaining anything with that second-round pick in 2028, while giving up a lottery pick," wrote @BullWalker97.
"If your strategy is trading top-five talent for second-round picks, you can keep it," posted @Ltgoatt.
"'Strategy.' LMAO, you traded a first-round player for two seconds. What strategy is that?" asked @30GoatStatus.
Johnson averaged 14.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.3 steals in her last year at LSU, leading the Tigers to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Women's Tournament .
Suarez, meanwhile, logged 17.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.4 steals in her one-and-done stint at TCU. The Horned Frogs lost to South Carolina in the Elite Eight.
