The University of Vermont officially announced Maureen Magarity as the Catamounts 10th women's basketball coach in a press release posted online on Monday, April 13 .
Magarity succeeds former Marist alum Alisa Kresge following Kresge's departure to Richmond on Saturday, April 11 .
The former University of New Hampshire and Holy Cross head coach has a foundation set, taking over one of the best programs in the America East Conference. Magarity looks to build off of Kresge's success which saw Vermont post five straight 20-win seasons and three NCAA Tournament appearances in the last four years.
"I'm honored to be named the Mayer Women's Basketball Coach at Vermont," said Magarity. "I'm so thankful to
for his belief in me. Over the past couple of years, I've fallen in love with this program. Coach Kresge has done an incredible job restoring a championship culture and I will work tirelessly to maintain the standards that have been established here. Having lived here the past two years I have a unique perspective and appreciation for the Burlington and UVM community. I look forward to continuing to be a part of it."
Magarity, who returns to the sidelines after a two-year coaching hiatus , was previously employed as UVM's director of major gifts for the athletic department. MyNBC's Jack Main broke the news on X, the social-media site formerly known as Twitter, earlier in the day on Monday, April 13.
On3's Talia Goodman also corroborated Main's reporting on X.
Magarity is married to Vermont men's basketball coach John Becker, who's been in charge of the Catamounts since 2011.
"I'm thrilled that Maureen will be leading our women's basketball program into the future," Vermont's athletic director Schulman said. "Maureen has had championship level success as a Division I head coach, and along the way developed a reputation as an exceptional mentor and role model who cares deeply about the wellbeing of her players as people, as students and as athletes. UVM Women's Basketball is a great source of pride for our campus and the entire State of Vermont and I'm fully confident in Maureen's ability to maintain our standing as one of the top mid-major programs in the country."
Magarity guided Holy Cross to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances in 2023 and 2024. She earned a NCAA Tournament win in 2024 with the Crusaders defeating UT Martin, 72-45 in the First Four.
Magarity is a former Kay Yow National Coach of the Year winner, earning the award in 2017 as the New Hampshire coach after the Wildcats set a school record for wins with 26. At New Hampshire, Magarity finished her time in Durham with 146 wins, the second-most in Wildcats history.
Vermont will host Magarity's introductionary press conference on Tuesday, April 14.
