Minnesota Vikings safety Jamal Adams was carted off the field in Saturday's preseason win over the New York Giants with an apparent lower-body injury. Kevin O'Connell told reporters after the game that Adams would undergo an MRI on Sunday, but that the initial testing wasn't promising.
On Sunday, it was confirmed that he would miss the 2026 season due to a knee injury , per Ian Rapoport. On Monday, O'Connell told reporters that Adams suffered a torn right quadriceps .
Adams suffered that injury in 2022, but it was to his other leg.
The devastating news is unfortunate for several reasons. For Adams, it puts his football career in jeopardy. He turns 31 in October and has struggled to stay healthy since his 2022 injury, playing 32 of 68 possible games over the past four seasons.
It also leaves a hole in the Vikings' defense. Adams had acclimated himself well to Brian Flores' scheme since signing last month, getting reps with the first-team defense in camp. He made an impressive tackle for loss in the first quarter of Saturday's game as well, showing his explosiveness and instincts.
Now, Minnesota has to decide whether it needs to find another safety. Does the team trust young players like Jay Ward and Jacob Thomas to help fill Adams' void? Or do the Vikings try to get Harrison Smith back for a 15th season?
