The Minnesota Vikings are sitting in first place in the NFC North with a 6-1 record. However, while their defense has been sensational this season and is at the top of the charts when it comes to giving up the fewest points in the NFL , most observers are diminishing their accomplishments because the offense has struggled so badly this season.
The Vikings could worry about this issue and go along with the critics who have referred to them as the worst team in the highly competitive NFC North, but they have a chance to make a major statement Monday night against the AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills.
They have a chance to play at U.S. Bank Stadium before a national TV audience and show what their defense is all about against Buffalo's Josh Allen and that team's explosive offense.
Brian Flores has built a defense that blitzes from all angles and can confuse any quarterback. The Bills may be averaging 33.3 points per game this season, but they haven't gone up against the likes of Dallas Turner, Blake Cashman, Andrew Van Ginkel, Josh Metellus and Harrison Smith.
Cohesive Vikings defense is loaded with star performances
Those are the key players on Flores' defense, and they interact beautifully with each other. Turner has 6.0 sacks, 8 tackles for loss and 2 forced fumbles. Cashman leads the team with 64 tackles and also has 4.5 sacks, 8.5 TFL, 5 passes batted down and 1 fumble recovery.
Van Ginkel leads the team with 6.5 sacks and also has 8.5 TFL, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery. Metellus can line up anywhere in the Flores defense and he has 50 tackles and 4 passes defensed. The veteran Smith has the ability to line up any of his fellow defenders and he has 15 tackles, 4 passes defensed and 1 interception.
There is little doubt that the Vikings are looking forward to the confrontation with Allen and slowing down the Buffalo offense.
The Vikings do need backup quarterback Carson Wentz to give the Vikings a representative offense. Head coach Kevin O'Connell needs Wentz to make quick and decisive reads and then get the ball to Justin Jefferson so the explosive receiver can make plays in the secondary.
The Vikings have lacked big-play ability with Kyler Murray (hamstring, will not play) at quarterback. Wentz needs to unlock this aspect of the Vikings' game to complement their sensational defensive play.
The Vikings want to make a statement after their 19-15 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 8. This is their opportunity to do just that.
