The Minnesota Vikings will be without wide receiver Jeshaun Jones for the first three games of the 2026 regular season after the NFL suspended him for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
The league announced the suspension Tuesday, with Jones set to begin serving it on Aug. 30. He will be eligible for reinstatement on Sept. 28. The NFL did not disclose the specific nature of the violation in its announcement. Jones will remain eligible to participate in Minnesota's preseason finale against the Denver Broncos on Friday.
The timing is particularly notable for Jones, who is currently competing for a spot in a crowded Vikings wide receiver room. Minnesota has Justin Jefferson , Jordan Addison and Jauan Jennings at the top of the depth chart, while young receivers such as Tai Felton and Myles Price have also made strong impressions throughout training camp and the preseason.
Jones has spent the last two seasons developing within Minnesota's practice squad after entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2024. The six-foot-one, 188-pound receiver signed with the Vikings following the 2024 NFL Draft and spent that entire season on the practice squad. He remained there for most of the 2025 season before being elevated to the active roster for Minnesota's Week 18 matchup against the Green Bay Packers , making his NFL debut.
Jones played six seasons at Maryland from 2018 through 2023, finishing his career with 151 receptions for 2,040 yards and 14 touchdowns across 48 games. In his final season, he posted career highs with 56 receptions and 790 receiving yards while being named a team captain and earning Third-Team All-Big Ten honors in 2023.
Now, however, Jones faces another hurdle in his attempt to establish himself in Minnesota. The suspension comes at an especially important point of his young career, with 53-man roster cuts looming. Jones can still use Friday's preseason finale to make a case for himself, but missing the first three games could affect how Minnesota evaluates him and his immediate role.
For a player who has spent two years patiently waiting for his opportunity and developing on the practice squad, the suspension represents a significant setback in his journey. Jones will have an opportunity to return in Week 4, but he will need to work his way back into Minnesota's plans once he becomes eligible.
At 26-years-old and not getting any younger, Jones will have to bounce back better than before if he wants another NFL opportunity.
