Sharing the court with the great Michael Jordan was a privilege not many were able to experience. Trash talking him? Entirely different, and almost nobody dared to cross that line, knowing the kind of relentless competitor Mike was.
However, there was a time when a young Antoine Walker reportedly dared to go where few would, and let Jordan, then eyeing his second comeback, hear a few things about who really runs the city of Chicago.
Young and (overly) confident talent
As the NCAA season reaches its boiling point in the Sweet 16, conversations about forgotten college stars start popping up more frequently. And on the "Cousins" podcast, Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady went down memory lane, bringing up one name that used to light it up at Kentucky — Antoine Walker. The NCAA champion in his sophomore year wasn't just productive; he was confident to a fault.
That same mindset carried over to those legendary summer runs against Jordan himself, as the Chicago Bulls legend and the greatest player to ever step foot on the hardwood during those times prepared for yet another comeback to the Association.
And since Walker was a Chicago native, playing in front of his people, he wasn't about to back down from anyone, not even His Airness, a man who put the city on the basketball map by bringing home six Larry O'Brien trophies during the height of his power. And as Carter recalled, it was fireworks.
"I'mma put another name real quick, particularly college. Antoine Walker in college…" Vince began talking about this underrated star from the past on the recent episode of the "Cousins" podcast.
"There is a guy who had handles with wiggle. Like I said, wasn't super athletic, he will catch you, he could dunk on you… But this man knew, he had one mentality — I'm the best player on the floor. And we've heard stories about him telling MJ to his face, 'You can't fool me. You in my city.' He told MJ, 'You in my city!'" Carter exclaimed. "I've seen summer league Antoine, I played in that Chicago league — woo, wee!"
Jordan had already stepped away from the Chicago Bulls (the second time) in 1998, but as he geared up for a return in the early 2000s, he made sure to surround himself with top-tier talent during those intense pickup runs. NBA players, local hoopers and even a guy who went on to challenge his GOAT title. LeBron James .
Walker wanted to make a name for himself
At the time, Walker saw it as an opportunity, both to compete, but also to try and make a statement among many icons. With elite names in the gym and even a 16-year-old LeBron reportedly making appearances, the level of competition was off the charts. And in that environment, tensions used to be at an all-time high, just like a highly competitive playoff series.
Walker himself later reflected on those runs , emphasizing just how much those battles meant, going up against a man many consider the basketball deity, no matter the trash talk around it.
"Just to be around him, to see him at that age, put the work in to get back to that level was special. Taught me a lot individually, and them runs were legendary," 'Toine said in his appearance on Two Cents Podcast. "I gotta thank Mike for that, Mike made those runs competitive."
Looking back, that moment of telling Jordan "you in my city" perfectly captures who Walker was at that stage of his NBA journey. Young and overly confident, some might even argue naive. While his NBA career didn't fully live up to the promise he showed early on, those stories remain proof that Toine was indeed a baller back in the day, because not many can say they looked the great Michael Jordan in the eye and claimed the city as their own.
