Kristaps Porzingis has announced that he is stepping away from basketball to prioritize his health. The veteran center had yet to feature this season after remaining sidelined with an undisclosed health issue .
The veteran center also wants to work with the organization to find a solution that makes sense for both sides. His announcement comes as the Golden State Warriors continue to face questions about their roster, with a familiar trade target potentially back in the picture.

Porzingis explained that his body had not responded as expected while ramping up for the season. He admitted that he was not in the condition required to perform at the level he expects from himself.
Porzingis also stressed his respect for Golden State and said he wants to work with the franchise to find a suitable resolution.
Porzingis signed a two-year, $40 million extension with the Warriors, with only $3 million guaranteed for the 2027-28 season. That structure gives Golden State some flexibility as it explores potential trade options.
Lauri Markkanen could become a trade target
The Warriors made a serious push to acquire Lauri Markkanen in the summer of 2024, and their interest could resurface as they assess their options following Porzingis' announcement.
Sean Deveney of Heavy recently reported that Golden State could revisit a deal for the Utah Jazz forward. One potential framework would involve Porzingis, Draymond Green and two first-round picks going to Utah.
Such a package would give the Jazz significant draft capital while allowing them to move more than $40 million off their books next season. However, Green's contract cannot be traded until Dec. 15, meaning any deal involving him would have to wait.
Markkanen averaged 26.7 points per game last season and shot 35.5% from three-point range.
Golden State could create a dangerous offensive group with Markkanen and Yaxel Lendeborg also featuring in the frontcourt.
