Draymond Green may have just given the Golden State Warriors the opportunity to have the mega-offseason fans have been craving. The four-time NBA champion is declining his $27.7 million player option and will become a free agent, per ESPN's Shams Charania. This move is not expected to jeopardize his future with the franchise, however. Instead, it could provide the Dubs with the financial flexibility to pursue both LeBron James and Anthony Davis .
ESPN's Brian Windhorst hinted at a similar possibility before the news became official.
Green knows the window is closing. The future Hall of Famer turned 36 in March. He watched longtime teammate Stephen Curry celebrate his 38th birthday shortly after and witnessed Jimmy Butler leave the court with a torn ACL back in January. Green understands that a power shift has fully taken shape in the West, with the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs competing to be the alpha. But he does not intend to just go gentle into that good night.
Although Green's opt-out decision will not answer questions about Golden State's long-term future, it can enable the organization to maximize its chances for the 2026-27 campaign. ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel already reported that the Warriors intend to target James via their mid-level exception . Their interest in a Butler-Davis trade with the Washington Wizards was also known. Completing both objectives seemed improbable, however.
That may no longer be the case following this latest development. Draymond Green , who joins LeBron James and Anthony Davis in being represented by Klutch Sports' Rich Paul, is ostensibly prioritizing team success over his personal contract. The construction of a potential super squad , albeit a very old one, would make the Warriors feel more relevant than they have been since their 2022 title run.
Four of the most important players of their era joining forces to reclaim glory and taunt Father Time. It is quite the idea, but for now, it is just that. Buckle up. The Bay Area is on chaos watch.
