The Washington Huskies were without several starters in their 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers, but could be on the verge of getting some important depth back.
At the top of that list is center Landen Hatchett, whom Jedd Fisch said on Thursday that the fourth-year would be a game-time decision for the Big Ten opener, before he was downgraded to doubtful and eventually missed the contest. However, for the first time this year, Hatchett dressed in pads and went through pregame warmups as he continues to await medical clearance to return to contact from a broken scaphoid bone in his wrist that he suffered last October.
"He got closer," Fisch said after the game. "He took a lot of reps in different aspects of practice, not in the competitive periods just yet. We're waiting on clearance there to be able to make a move there. But he got closer this week to where we thought we'd be."
The Huskies were also without a pair of starters in the secondary: cornerback Emmanuel Karnley and nickelback Rahshawn Clark, who were both reportedly available in an emergency situation, even though the latter was available to return kicks and punts on Saturday night but did not take a defensive snap.
Karnley's absence was felt in a major way in the loss, as the Virginia transfer was replaced by third-year Elias Johnson, who was picked on early by Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey and surrendered a pair of touchdowns in the contest. But, according to Fisch, both Karnley and Clark should return to their usual roles for Washington's next matchup with USC.
"They both should be ready to play defense and special teams for next week," he said.
