Akron comes into the 2026 season with positive momentum after finishing 5-7 last year, their third consecutive season in which their record improved. The Zips ended 2025 with a 19-16 win over Bowling Green, giving them three victories in their final four games. Running back Jordan Gant, who is back on the 2026 roster, rushed for 86 yards in the finale and finished the season with 1,032 yards, becoming Akron's first 1,000-yard rusher since 2008. The Zips averaged 354.8 total yards and 22.3 points per game last season and went 4-4 in MAC play.
Wake Forest went 9-4 in Jake Dickert's first season as head coach, closing the year with a 43-29 win over Mississippi State in the Duke's Mayo Bowl, producing 451 total yards. Returning wide receiver Carlos Hernandez caught six passes for 73 yards in that game and finished the season with 40 receptions for 611 yards and three touchdowns. Wake Forest will have a new quarterback this season, as they gave North Carolina transfer Gio Lopez the job.
