The New York Mets are trying to break an 11-game losing streak at home on Tuesday night against the Minnesota Twins . They were up 3-0, partly thanks to a great start from their young ace. Mets pitcher Nolan McLean had a perfect game going through five innings before immediately falling to a broadcast jinx.
SNY play-by-play broadcaster Gary Cohen was delivering an incredible stat about McLean’s start. This appearance was the second time he brought a perfect game into the sixth inning this season, just the third Met pitcher in history to do that. Before Cohen could finish the sentence, Matt Wallner had deposited a 1-0 pitch into left field for a single.
McLean got the next two hitters out, but allowed a two-run home run to Byron Buxton , cutting New York’s lead to 3-2. He allowed the game-tying run in the seventh inning before he was pulled. His final line was 6.2 innings, five hits, three earned runs, no walks, and 10 strikeouts.
As for the stat, McLean joins Rick Reed in 1998 and Steve Trachsel in 2002 as the only Mets to have two perfect game bids reach the 6th inning in one season. Neither Reed nor Trachsel completed their perfecto bids. There have been no perfect games in Mets history, just two no-hitters. The first was Johan Santana in 2012, and the second was a combined no-hitter in 2022.
The Mets have the worst record in the National League at 7-15 . With the Twins and Colorado Rockies coming to Queens for series, they should be able to break the skid. But even when they get a great start, they cannot score enough to lift their starting pitcher. Their only runs in the first eight innings of this game came on one Francisco Lindor home run.
The Mets and Twins play the middle game of their set on Wednesday at 7:10.
