There certainly is a great deal of consternation because of the Vikings' struggling and stumbling offense. It is certainly an area of concern, and it will be a major challenge for head coach Kevin O'Connell to straighten out the problems that QB Kyler Murray has faced to this point in the season.
However, there is no reason for the Vikings to panic. They still have the No. 1 scoring defense in the NFL, the No. 2 overall defense and the No. 2 pass defense. The run defense was exposed a bit by the Detroit Lions in the 19-15 loss in Week 8, but that was largely the result of an offense that struggled to stay on the field and put the Minnesota defense at a disadvantage.
The Vikings are capable of confusing opposing quarterbacks with their blitzing tendencies. The Vikings dictated the pace of the game against the Lions well into the third quarter, as they had 4.0 sacks against the Lions.
Versatile linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel had 2.5 sacks, 3 quarterback hits and 4 tackles.Defensive coordinator Brian Flores appears to have a different hero making plays for him on an every-week basis.
Linebacker Blake Cashman appears to be an All-Pro candidate as the season approaches the halfway point. Dallas Turner is a dynamic pass rusher, Josh Metellus is a safety who can play anywhere on the field and Eric Wilson is a big-time hitter with knockout power.
Another test coming for Vikings in Week 9
The defense is the strength of the Vikings this season, and Flores can't allow this unit to lose faith or confidence just because the offense is having more than its share of problems. Flores has to give the Vikings more goals and continue to provide a roadmap for success.
The Vikings have to shake off their loss to the Lions and prepare for the Buffalo Bills. Josh Allen may be the most dangerous quarterback in the NFL, and containing him is never easy. However, Allen and the Bills don't always come close to performing as well on the road as they do at home.
Additionally, Allen will make mistakes on occasion and throw the ball into tight windows when his receivers are not open. This game may be all about forcing Allen into mistakes and taking advantage of them.
The Vikings arguably have the best defense in football and there can be no loss of faith simply because the team tasted defeat for the first time all season.
