The Miami Marlins have lost another infielder as they continue to reshape their roster ahead of the 2027 season. The Chicago White Sox claimed Graham Pauley off waivers from Miami on Monday, ending the 26-year-old's tenure with the Fish.
The move was part of a series of roster transactions made by the Marlins as they prepare for the offseason. Miami also placed right-handed pitcher Josh White and left-hander Patrick Monteverde on outright waivers, with White subsequently claimed by the Baltimore Orioles.
Pauley, meanwhile, will join a Chicago organization looking to build on its progress during the 2026 campaign. The White Sox announced the acquisition Monday, with the corresponding moves leaving their 40-man roster at 39 players.
Pauley appeared in 62 games for Miami in 2026, recording 30 hits, nine doubles, one triple, and four home runs. He drove in 25 runs and scored 15 times while stealing one base. The left-handed hitter finished the season with a .211 batting average and a .373 slugging percentage.
Pauley also spent time with Triple-A Jacksonville, where he delivered a more productive offensive performance. In 46 games, he hit .236 with 10 doubles, seven home runs and 23 RBIs while posting a .768 OPS.
His ability to play multiple positions could make him a useful addition to Chicago's infield depth. Although third base has been his primary position, Pauley has also appeared at first base, second base, and center field during his professional career.
Pauley's Path in the Pros
Pauley was originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the 13th round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Duke University. He made his major league debut in 2024 before being traded to Miami as part of the package that sent reliever Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing to San Diego.
The Marlins acquired Pauley, Adam Mazur, Robby Snelling and Jay Beshears in the deal. Snelling has ascended to the number-two spot in the Marlins prospect rankings this season. The southpaw is expected to make his MLB debut in mid-2027.
Pauley appeared in 124 games with Miami, hitting .218 with eight home runs and 36 RBIs. His defensive versatility was among his most valuable contributions, particularly at third base.
His departure could essentially leave Javier Sanoja to officially take over as Miami's everyday third baseman in 2027, although that was essentially already the plan following Sanoja's season... one that saw him finish as a Gold Glove finalist .
On top of Sanoja's skills, the club also has top prospect Aiva Arquette , who is a natural shortstop but seems set to transition to third. And with other, more high-profile prospects who would surely supplant
The organization has already begun making room for potential offseason additions, with its 40-man roster reduced to 36 players following Monday's transactions.
For Pauley, the waiver claim provides an opportunity to establish himself with a new organization and potentially earn a role with a Chicago team looking to improve its infield depth.
Meanwhile, Monday's moves trimmed the Marlins' 40-man roster down to 36, clearing room as the front office prepares to pursue additions this offseason.
