The Chicago White Sox 's postseason run ended one win short of the American League Championship Series, but manager Will Venable was not about to let the loss define what his team accomplished. Chicago fell 2-0 to the Cleveland Guardians in Game 5 of the ALDS on Saturday at Progressive Field, becoming just the seventh team in the Wild Card era to lose a best-of-five series after taking a 2-0 lead.

Venable admitted the sting was real, but he also made sure to put the season in perspective.
"We are sitting in disappointment, obviously, and it hurts not to be able to advance here. That's what we came to do," Venable told reporters after the game. "So we're not just happy that we got here. We understand what it takes to get here and have more clarity on what it's gonna take the next time around to go even further."

"At the same time, you do zoom out and you look at what this group accomplished and what they did to bring baseball back to the White Sox and the pride back to the organization and really the city," he added. "It's just amazing what these guys did."

The turnaround was stunning. Chicago lost 102 games in 2025, then swept the Houston Astros in the Wild Card Series this October for the franchise's first playoff series win since 2005. The White Sox followed that by winning the first two games of the ALDS in Cleveland before the Guardians stormed back.
Guardians pitchers struck out 75 Chicago hitters across the five games , the most ever in a postseason series of that length. Gavin Williams struck out 12 over 5 2/3 scoreless innings in the clincher, and Jose Ramirez's two-run homer in the fourth accounted for all of the scoring.
For Venable, though, the lasting memory will be the people in his clubhouse.

"I told those guys after the game this is easily the most fun that I've had in all my years in Major League Baseball," Venable said. "It's because of the personalities in that room, the character of the group and how they went out there every day, fought and did things the right way."

Chicago now heads into the offseason with plenty of reason for optimism.
