- White Sox Have Reason to Be Cautious With Teruaki Sato
The Hanshin Tigers of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball have officially accepted the posting request for 27-year-old Teruaki Sato .
It's a sign that Japan's most recent Triple Crown winner, who hit .306 with 39 home runs and 106 RBIs in 2026, will be making the jump to Major League Baseball for the 2027 season. Sato could even sign with a new team before the expected MLB lockout begins in the early stages of the offseason.

Naturally, there have already been connections made to the Chicago White Sox . After seeing the White Sox take a swing on Japanese star Munetaka Murakami in 2026, the organization appears to recognize the value of signing free agents from Japan.
Not only was Murakami an All-Star who hit 35 home runs during his rookie season in Major League Baseball, but he was also, in many ways, the face of the franchise in 2026. He drove up ticket sales, had one of the best-selling jerseys in baseball, and even had concession items at Rate Field named after him.
The marketing value of having Murakami in a White Sox uniform has been significant, and it's another reason for Chicago to consider a long-term contract extension .
As the club looks to take another step forward, add more talent, and make a push for a World Series, the South Side could be a logical landing spot for a player like Sato, especially if the White Sox plan to use him as a designated hitter or believe he can stick in the outfield.

If there's one reason for concern, though, it's how similar Sato is to Murakami, and that goes for his weaknesses just as much as his strengths.
Both are left-handed hitters who won a Triple Crown in Japan but have significant swing-and-miss concerns. Over 3,117 at-bats in NPB, Murakami struck out 977 times, equivalent to 31.3% of his at-bats. Sato has 2,979 career NPB at-bats with 909 strikeouts, a rate of 30.5%.
For a White Sox team that already has Murakami and Colson Montgomery , who just set the MLB single-season record for strikeouts by a batter, adding another left-handed bat with significant swing-and-miss concerns may create more problems than it solves.
The general consensus is that Sato falls somewhere between Munetaka Murakami and fellow Japanese rookie standout Kazuma Okamoto in several key areas. He has more power than Okamoto, but less than Murakami. His contact ability is better than Murakami's, but not quite at the level of Okamoto.
Ultimately, Sato should be expected to be a quality MLB bat, but not one without flaws. The White Sox need to determine whether they're willing to pay the price for another top Japanese free agent, even if it creates some redundancy in their lineup.

It's an avenue worth exploring. But after watching how Chicago fared during the ALDS, when strikeouts ultimately killed the team's offensive momentum and contributed to its elimination, perhaps the White Sox would be better served investing their money in more well-rounded players who complement the current roster.
