The Detroit Lions saw one of their marquee free-agent additions, defensive back Christian Izien , make his debut with the franchise last week against the Buffalo Bills on prime time.
Izien played 26 defensive snaps, mostly at safety, and was solid. The veteran tallied three tackles, two defensive stops, and a 72.9 Pro Football Focus grade , and was a bright spot on a Lions' defense that struggled mightily in the 41-31 loss.
After missing the season opener with a groin injury, Izien is back healthy and ready to make a difference on defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard 's unit. Detroit will need Izien at his best in Week 3 against the New York Jets because the injury report revealed another issue in the secondary.
Izien Could be a Full-Time Starter in Week 3

The Lions practiced for the final time on Friday ahead of Sunday's contest and also released the injury report. Safety Thomas Harper , who has played a key role in the back end with Chuck Clark since Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph are still out, will not play in Week 3 as he deals with an ankle injury. Harper saw increased snaps in Week 2 after Avonte Maddox went down with what was later revealed to be a season-ending foot injury.
With Harper out, head coach Dan Campbell announced that Izien has been receiving a bunch of reps at safety in practice this week, and it looked good. Detroit's plan could be to start Izien at safety alongside Clark.
Izien played well in Week 2, has 15 games of starting experience under his belt, and is the most versatile defensive back on the roster . The Lions could play Izien at multiple spots this weekend, but it would be wise to roll with the 26-year-old as a full-time starter with Harper sidelined.
If Izien can provide stable play on Sunday and help Detroit's secondary take a step in the right direction after a rough start to the year , it would be a major development. A standout performance from Izien could also catapult the Lions to a road victory.
Detroit will need more than just Izien to come ready to play in Week 3, but if the Rutgers product fills his role at a high level, a win will be in sight.
