The Red Sox lineup is lacking a true power bat going into the 2026 season, but David Ortiz is still confident in his former team.
"I'm an offense guy, and I like my offense to be good to go, which I think we're gonna be all right with," Ortiz told Adam Schein on Mad Dog Sports Radio . "But I also like my pitching staff to be unstoppable, because good pitching is always gonna be able to stop good offense. That's the name of the game. If you got good pitching, you can make life miserable for their offense."
After missing out on key free agents like Pete Alonso , Kyle Schwarber and failing to re-sign Alex Bregman , Boston shifted its focus to run prevention and a strong pitching rotation.
The Red Sox acquired Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo and signed Ranger Suárez to a five-year deal. Boston already has ace Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello in the mix, and Aroldis Chapman as its closer.
The pitching staff could make it hard on batters this season, but the Red Sox will still need to score runs to win games. Without someone like Bregman or Rafael Devers in the lineup, Boston will rely on Trevor Story , Roman Anthony , Ceddanne Rafaela , Wilyer Abreu and Willson Contreras to help carry the offense.
