FIFA suspended Luis Suárez for nine matches

On June 26, 2014, FIFA announced a nine-match international suspension and a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs. The ruling followed its disciplinary investigation into Suárez's conduct against Italy in Natal.

The nine-game penalty surpassed the previous official World Cup disciplinary record of eight matches, imposed on Italy's Mauro Tassotti in 1994. FIFA official Claudio Sulser also criticized the player's conduct.

Luis Suárez faced four months of restrictions

FIFA additionally barred Suárez from soccer activities for four months, initially prohibiting training and stadium attendance. It also excluded him from club matches, extending the penalty beyond Uruguay's international fixtures.

On August 14, 2014, the Court of Arbitration for Sport retained the suspension from official matches but permitted training and friendlies. That decision narrowed FIFA's restrictions without canceling the punishment.
