Why The Texans Restructured Tank Dell's Contract

The timing makes sense when you look at where Dell is right now. The wide receiver has not played since suffering a brutal knee injury late in the 2024 season. He missed all of 2025 and, despite finally getting back onto the practice field this summer, the Texans still don't believe he is ready for game action.

The Texans placed Dell on injured reserve this week, meaning he will miss at least the first four games of the season. Nick Caserio made it clear that the team isn't rushing him.

Caserio also pointed to something beyond physical recovery. Dell needs to regain enough confidence to play the way he did before the injury.

That uncertainty is important here. Dell was originally set to make $3.624 million in the final year of his rookie contract, with a $3.967 million cap hit. Under the new agreement, his cap number drops to roughly $1.99 million, while he gets a $500,000 signing bonus and $1.145 million base salary.

However, for the Texans, that is nearly $2 million back without simply moving on from a receiver who was productive before his injury. Dell caught 98 passes for 1,376 yards and 10 touchdowns during his first two seasons. He also developed a strong connection with C.J. Stroud, making the decision to keep him around fairly straightforward, even with his return date still uncertain.

There is another piece to the move, too. Dell received a fourth-year salary increase through the NFL's proven performance escalator. The Texans had four players receive that bump; however, only Dell and Jake Patterson got revised contracts. Salary-cap analyst TexansCap noted that former starting center Jake Andrews was another player with a PPE increase, and questioned why Houston couldn't reach a similar agreement with him.

As for Dell, the restructure buys both sides some time. He gets guaranteed money while working toward a return. The Texans get immediate cap relief and keep a player who could still become an important piece of their offense.

The bigger question comes later. This is the final year of Dell's rookie deal. By the time he is eligible to return, 652 days will have passed since his last competitive game. If he can get back to anything close to the receiver the Texans had in 2023 and 2024, the contract decision could look very different by the end of the season.
