Mexico kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against South Africa in a repeat of the opening fixture from the 2010 tournament.
That match ended in a 1-1 draw, but Mexico will be looking for a different result this time as they begin their campaign on home soil. Expectations are high for the co-hosts, and supporters will be hoping the team can make a strong start and reach the knockout stages.
However, one notable name is missing from Mexico's starting lineup for the Group A match.
Why Is Edson Alvarez Not Playing Against South Africa?
Mexico captain Edson Alvarez has not been included in the starting lineup on June 11 against South Africa as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.
The defensive midfielder underwent surgery on his right ankle on February 17 after dealing with the issue since late 2025. Reports at the time suggested a recovery period of between four and eight weeks, but Alvarez has not yet returned to full match fitness.
Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre has therefore opted not to risk the experienced midfielder in the team's opening World Cup fixture.

Alvarez remains one of Mexico's most important players. Whether used in midfield or defence, he provides leadership, defensive stability, and experience. Mexico will hope the rest of the squad can deliver a positive result in their first match of the tournament.
