This pair of Miami Dolphins rookies warrant your attention whether they end up playing a lot in 2026 or not.
Good luck projecting a depth chart for the Miami Dolphins defense right now. The roster is flush with new faces, competition is everywhere, and the pecking order remains fluid heading into training camp this week. Don't expect much clarity before September, either.
But among the young players who may not be in position to seize playing time early, there are a pair that loom large as potential omens of the big picture ahead. Even if rookies Trey Moore and Kyle Louis don't start, their progression will say a lot about this regime. You may not think that to be true based off their draft status, but hear me out.

Jeff Hafley is looking to get his vision for his defense to come to life. And the Miami Dolphins are starting from scratch.
That means that a pair of mid-round rookies, like Moore and Louis, will have every opportunity to avoid being a square peg in a round hole. Miami has ample flexibility to maximize their current talent. And, given that Hafley and the rest of this regime targeted both players early on Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft? You'd like to think there's a vision and pathway for both. Yes, both Moore and Louis aren't universal scheme talents. Moore is a linebacker/edge hybrid and Louis blurs the lines between a safety and a linebacker. But that's exactly where Hafley's defensive touch, creativity and vision must shine.
Why is it so important to track? If Miami hits on players like Moore and Louis, turning their physical projections into functional NFL roles, it validates the evaluation process that general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and Hafley are building together. Lest we forget, the objective here is to "build through the draft". That means the Day 3 talent must deliver.
But it will also serve to tell us about Hafley and his foresight with prospects. So consider this a test. Defense is Jeff Hafley's wheelhouse, so what the staff thought of these players versus what they actually turn into will tell us a great deal about the trajectory of this rebuild.
Don't expect an immediate answer. The early returns from training camp will offer some clues, but the real evaluation window stretches through the regular season. Can Moore and Louis carve out valuable roles with unique skill sets? They deserve time to figure it out. But again, given the blank slate nature of Miami's defense, both talents failing to register a mark on the season would be disappointing in more ways than one.
