Professional hockey has lost a player whose journey was anything but conventional. Just weeks after putting pen to paper on a deal with Swedish Hockey League club HV71, a 27-year-old forward shocked the hockey world by announcing his permanent retirement from the sport. The timing caught many off guard, but the signs had been there for years.
Noah Philp was never selected in the NHL Draft, yet he managed to carve out a path to the highest level of the sport through sheer determination and skill. After lighting up the WHL as a prolific scorer with the Seattle Thunderbirds, Philp attended the University of Alberta before turning professional in the spring of 2022 with the Edmonton Oilers organization. His rookie campaign with the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL during the 2022-2023 season was impressive, tallying 37 points across 70 games and establishing himself as a genuine development success story.
However, it was precisely at that juncture that Philp's trajectory took an unexpected turn. Instead of building on his momentum and pushing for a full-time NHL roster spot, the 6-foot-3 center stepped away from the game entirely for a full season. That initial departure hinted that thoughts of retirement were already swirling in his mind far earlier than they do for most professional athletes.
When he returned for the 2024-2025 campaign, Philp picked up right where he left off, posting 35 points in 55 AHL contests and earning his first NHL call-up. He appeared in 15 games with the Oilers. The following season, he earned a spot on Edmonton's roster out of training camp but managed only three points in 15 games before being placed on waivers in early December. The Carolina Hurricanes claimed him off the wire, though his time in Carolina at the NHL level was fleeting, consisting of just two games. He spent the remainder of the season in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves, where he was outstanding during the playoffs, recording 14 points in 21 postseason games as the team advanced all the way to the Calder Cup Final.
In a statement released through HV71, Philp apologized to the Swedish club for the awkward timing of his announcement. He had only recently signed a one-year contract that included an option for a second season. Despite the unfortunate circumstances, Philp chose transparency over pretense, explaining that his motivation for hockey was no longer fully there. Rather than go through the motions and fail to give his all on the ice, he felt it was more respectful to be upfront about where he stood mentally.
HV71 acknowledged the situation and confirmed they would move quickly to find a replacement to fill the gap in their lineup. The club's measured response underscored a mutual respect between player and organization, even in a difficult moment.
Philp's retirement closes the book on a career that, while relatively brief, was genuinely inspiring in its arc from undrafted college player to NHL regular. His story serves as a powerful reminder that talent and opportunity alone do not sustain a career at the professional level. The human element, particularly internal drive and personal fulfillment, plays an equally critical role. For Philp, stepping away was not a sign of weakness but an act of self-awareness that few athletes are willing to embrace so openly.
