Pitt Panthers quarterback Holden Geriner will have less room for error when the Panthers face Boston College on Saturday.
After Pitt's loss to North Carolina, head coach Pat Narduzzi confirmed that Geriner would remain the starting quarterback against Boston College . Narduzzi's decision comes with an important caveat: Geriner will need to show he can sustain his performance throughout all four quarters.
"We'll have a shorter rope this week," Narduzzi said.
The coach pointed to the need for a full-game effort from Geriner, making it clear that a strong half will not be enough to secure the offense's success.
"Holden's had a shot, we need 60 minutes, okay? It's a 60-minute game. We don't need 30 minutes, we need 60 minutes of the best football," Narduzzi said.
Freshman quarterback Corey Dailey has also been getting practice reps, according to 93.7 The Fan, adding another layer to Pitt's quarterback situation. While Narduzzi has committed to Geriner as the starter, his comments suggest the coaching staff will be watching closely if the offense struggles.
Still, Narduzzi cautioned against placing the team's struggles entirely on Geriner. Quarterbacks often draw the most criticism, but the coach stressed that the responsibility for a loss extends across the roster.
"Obviously the quarterback's always going to take the heat," Narduzzi said. "But, you know, there's blame to go around. Everybody on the team, it's always a team win and a team loss."
Pitt will need better execution across the board against Boston College. Geriner's performance will be a major storyline, but the Panthers' ability to put together a complete game will also be critical to their chances of bouncing back.
