The San Francisco Giants were open to trading basically everyone at the 2026 deadline, and here in the offseason, that's once again the case.
Casey Schmitt is only 27 years old, and he's still under team control for a few years.
There's a strong case to be made that they should try to trade some of the aging veterans who aren't worth the massive contracts they signed, but when it comes to Schmitt, he shouldn't be going anywhere.
Bleacher Report 's Zachary Rymer recently named Schmitt the No. 2 option for the Giants to trade, but that feels like a very backwards move for San Francisco to make.
Schmitt is coming off the best season of his career and, while it was cut short, he's shown no signs of being limited in 2027 or beyond.
Obviously, getting him back to being a 1.5 WAR player is going to be easier said than done, but it's just as much mental as it is anything else.
Schmitt had the first 100-at-bat season of his four-year career, and one can only imagine what his numbers would've looked like if he hadn't gone down with an injury on Monday, July 27.
Schmitt should be part of the Giants' core
Getting younger is definitely a big conversation surrounding this team, but Schmitt's name shouldn't be on the chopping block because of his age.
He'll turn 28 right before the 2027 season, but the right-handed outfielder is someone that seemed to finally find his stride in the MLB.
Trading him now would be a move this Giants team could instantly regret, and there's no doubt his value plummeted due to the left knee lateral meniscus tear.
Schmitt is going to have to work his way back into this Giants lineup, but if they're able to move the likes of Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, Jung Hoo Lee, or even Rafael Devers , that opens the door for a fresh looking team in 2027 and beyond.
Remember, this is a guy who only made $810,000 this past season. He'll go through arbitration each of the next three seasons. But his value will be dependent on whether he's able to not only stay healthy and able to hit .271 with 20 homers like he did this past season.
The Giants had a ton of turnover in 2026, but Schmitt was tied for the second most homers with the fifth most at-bats. He wasn't able to rival Devers in many categories, but that could be a goal for '27, along with hitting 10 stolen bases and 75+ RBIs.
