The North Carolina Tar Heels football program desperately needs to produce a worthwhile 2026-27 college football season for a multitude of reasons.
There may not be a more crucial reason than head coach Bill Belichick's job security, which is hanging in the balance after leading North Carolina to a 4-8 record last season. The 74-year-old head coach will be dependent on multiple returning veterans to steady the ship, including defensive back Kaleb Cost. While speaking with the media this past week, Belichick highlighted several aspects of Cost's impact on the Tar Heels' defense.

"He's a four-down player that, honestly, we'd probably leave out there for every single down unless we're on offense," Belichick said. "He's a good tackler, he's a physical player and that really helps your defense when he is in that interior type of position. But he's also played outside and safety, and all four phases of the kicking game."
"He helps a lot," Belichick continued. "He's really a three-year starter and you can see that out on the field. He's very experienced. He plays a position where a lot happens, in that nickel spot. Sometimes you're guarding guys outside one-on-one, you have guys inside in the run game, guarding the passing game and play action. You're guarding different types of receivers like a big tight end or a little slot receiver, so there's a lot of guys that he has to cover."

Cost has played multiple positions in the secondary throughout his career, and that versatility provides flexibility for the personnel groupings that UNC can deploy. The senior defensive back projects to be the starting slot cornerback, and his tackling ability will be highlighted throughout the season.
North Carolina's defense will be heavily relied on this upcoming season, with the offense expected to be a work in progress, especially in the first few games. Over the last two seasons, Cost's production has jumped significantly, with 109 tackles, nine pass deflections, and three interceptions. The Tar Heels need Cost to continue impacting the game in several ways.
While there are multiple returning players in the Tar Heels' secondary, including Cost, there are also several newcomers . Michigan State transfer cornerback Willie Ade, 4-star cornerback Kenton Dopson III, and 4-star safety Jakob Weatherspoon highlight the incoming talent in that department. I bring that up to also say that Cost's ability to lead this group is another factor in his role on this defense.
Overall, Cost is an instrumental asset on the Tar Heels' defense, and if he can replicate his impact over the last two seasons, this unit will be in great shape every week.
