With the 2026 NFL Draft just over two weeks away, ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell has proposed a bold trade scenario involving J.J. McCarthy and the Los Angeles Rams .

In this hypothetical situation, the Minnesota Vikings would send McCarthy, along with the 18th overall pick and a third-round selection, to move up to the Rams’ 13th overall pick.
Barnwell argues that while Matthew Stafford is coming off an MVP season, his age of 38 makes it crucial for the Rams to establish a viable backup plan.
This trade would provide Los Angeles with a promising successor while allowing Minnesota to improve its draft position to address other areas of the roster.
As these trade rumors circulate, Justin Jefferson is focusing on the competitive dynamic within the Vikings’ facility.

On the first day of offseason workouts, Jefferson expressed excitement about Kyler Murray ’s arrival and the intensity he brings to the quarterback room.
According to Ben Goessling on X, Jefferson has already spent time working out with McCarthy and believes that having a veteran like Murray to compete against is exactly what the young quarterback needs.
Jefferson noted that feeling this type of pressure will help McCarthy elevate his mental and physical preparation.
The quarterback situation in Minnesota has become even more crowded with the re-signing of veteran Carson Wentz .
Tom Pelissero reported that Wentz is returning to the Vikings on a one-year deal, joining a room that already features both Murray and McCarthy.

Wentz started five games for the team in 2025 before a dislocated shoulder cut his season short, and his return gives the coaching staff another experienced option.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell has refrained from naming a definitive starter between Murray and McCarthy at this point, ensuring that the pressure Jefferson highlighted remains a constant factor as the team prepares for the 2026 campaign.
