"My wife wants to kill me now!"

Summer 2026 was shaping up to be a quiet one for Cam Talbot.
After two seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, the 39-year-old goaltender was waiting for a call that never came. No contract offer was on the horizon, and the 14-year NHL veteran was beginning to seriously believe that the curtain had fallen on his long career.

So, like any good family man who thinks he has some free time on his hands, he made a decision that would soon haunt him: Buy a puppy. He told the story to reporter Brian Hedger of the Columbus Dispatch . "I thought I was going to retire, so I thought, 'Hey, let's get a dog!'" The problem is, retirement didn't happen after all, and the Columbus Blue Jackets called him up just days before training camp began. Now the entire Talbot family, including Emmie , a three-month-old Goldendoodle, finds themselves living in a hotel while they look for a house in a new city.
"My wife is ready to kill me!"
- Cam Talbot
A traveling goalie the likes of which the NHL has rarely seen.
Columbus represents Cam Talbot's ninth NHLcareer , which will tie him with a record held by former goaltender Sean Burke. Before joining the Blue Jackets, Talbot played for the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames, Minnesota Wild, Ottawa Senators, Los Angeles Kings, and Detroit Red Wings.

Despite his nomadic career, he doesn't fit the classic profile of the itinerant player struggling to find his place. His statistics speak for themselves: 567 games played, 533 starts, a goals-against average of 2.69, a save percentage of .911, and 33 shutouts.
The Blue Jackets signed him as an emergency replacement after goaltender Elvis Merzlikinssuffered a shoulder injuryin August that required surgery. Talbot was brought in to back up Jet Greaves, with whom he had previously formed a tandem at the World Championship in May 2026 with Team Canada. The two goaltenders had forged a close friendship during the tournament, and their families got along just as well. "I texted him when he signed his contract, and he was one of the first to contact me when I signed here ," Talbot explained.
His late arrival, however, led to some amusing logistical complications. His new Blue Jackets gear was still stuck in Toronto, awaiting approval from Kay Whitmore, the former NHL goaltender turned vice-president of hockey operations, who must personally inspect and initial every piece of goaltending equipment used in the league. If the equipment didn't arrive on time, Talbot risked making his Columbus debut wearing his old Detroit Red Wings gear.
A family well-versed in moving, but who yearn for stability
For Talbot's nine-year-old twins, Landon and Slone, this life of constant moving is all they know. Columbus will be their eighth city with ties to an NHL team. Their two-year stint in Detroit was a first: it was the first time they attended the same school two years in a row. "They're, unfortunately, very used to it, but they're also resilient ," their father said.

Talbot acknowledges that this nomadic lifestyle is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, his children have developed a remarkable ability to adapt, make new friends, and immerse themselves in new environments. On the other hand, the guardian feels a certain guilt about imposing this way of life on them. "It's nice, as a father, to see that they have this resilience, but I also feel bad about putting them through this ," he admitted.
That's why Columbus could very well be the final stop on this long odyssey. Talbot is approaching this stage with the mindset that it's the end of the road. His children walked him onto the blue carpet rolled out by the Blue Jackets before their 6-3 opening-day victory over the Buffalo Sabres, and their design will adorn one of his new masks, possibly the last of his career. "I wouldn't move again if something came up here that would allow me to stay," he stated. "We'll see. We'll reassess later, but I know my wife will kill me if she has to move again."
Between a rambunctious puppy in a hotel room, equipment stuck in Toronto and a wife whose patience has its limits, Cam Talbotbegins what could be the final chapter of his career with a smile.
