📝 2026 World Cup, the overnight round-up
Every morning, OneFootball will bring you a full recap of the night at the World Cup.
The must-see story of the night
What a tough start to this World Cup for the South American nations! With Uruguay being held to a draw by Saudi Arabia (1-1), none of the CONMEBOL sides that have played so far have managed to win a single match (two draws, two defeats).

By contrast, Asia is doing more than holding its own, remaining unbeaten with two wins and four draws. Iran notably helped the AFC keep that run going tonight by earning a draw against New Zealand .

The 3 players who stood out
In what was probably, to everyone's surprise, the most entertaining match of the night, the attacking duo of Chris Wood and Elijah Just caused Iran all sorts of problems. Just also became the first player ever to score a World Cup brace for New Zealand.

The Nottingham Forest powerhouse also made his mark statistically, with two assists for the hero of the night. Could New Zealand be the surprise package of this World Cup?
Finally, in the night's other match, Mohammed Al-Owais stole the spotlight against Uruguay. Just like in the game against Argentina in 2022, the 34-year-old goalkeeper delivered a huge performance with nine saves, notably preventing La Celeste from taking the lead in stoppage time.
