- X-Factor: Jason Beck Has No Excuses Against Struggling Michigan State Defense
(USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect)
Michigan offensive coordinator Jason Beck has faced plenty of criticism throughout the 2026 season, and much of it has been warranted. The Wolverines have struggled to establish a consistent rushing attack, the offensive line has been unreliable and oft-injured and the passing game has experienced its share of growing pains.
But Saturday's rivalry matchup against Michigan State presents a golden opportunity to change that narrative.

And that makes Beck the biggest X-Factor for Michigan this weekend.
Through eight games, Michigan ranks No. 97 nationally in rushing offense, averaging just 138 yards per game and 3.70 yards per carry. The passing attack has been even worse, ranking No. 120 nationally with just 178.4 yards per game, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Perhaps most concerning, the Wolverines rank No. 114 nationally in scoring offense, averaging a miserable 21.3 points per contest.
For a program with Michigan's expectations, those numbers simply aren't acceptable.
Fortunately, Michigan State has struggled mightily on both sides of the football. The Spartans rank No. 86 nationally against the run and No. 50 against the pass, presenting a favorable matchup for an offense desperately needing positive momentum.

For Beck, there's simply no excuse for another underwhelming performance.
Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham has repeatedly emphasized the importance of establishing a productive ground game, but the Wolverines have struggled to consistently create running lanes for Jordan Marshall and Savion Hiter.
Against Michigan State's struggling rushing defense, that needs to change.
Beck should be able to establish a physical rushing attack, create manageable third-down situations and open opportunities for freshman quarterback Tommy Carr to make plays through the air.
Carr's development provides another reason for optimism.

The freshman is coming off an impressive performance against Rutgers , showcasing the mobility, decision-making and playmaking ability that Whittingham has praised. With Carr growing more comfortable as Michigan's starter, Beck has an opportunity to expand the playbook.
Michigan State's offensive struggles also make this matchup particularly favorable. The Spartans rank No. 122 nationally in rushing offense and No. 117 in passing offense, meaning Michigan's defense should have opportunities to give Beck's unit favorable field position.
Of course, rivalry games can be unpredictable, and Michigan can't afford to overlook its in-state opponent.
Still, this is precisely the type of matchup where Michigan's offense should be able to impose its will.

Whittingham has already acknowledged the offensive struggles and previously indicated that difficult coaching decisions aren't off the table if things don't improve.
If Michigan can't consistently move the football against this Michigan State defense, serious questions about Beck's offense will only grow louder.
