The New York Yankees announced two roster moves ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Texas Rangers . Right-handed pitcher Elmer Rodriguez was recalled from Triple-A while outfielder Randall Grichuk was designated for assignment.
Grichuk signed a minor league contract with the Yankees this past offseason. He battled for a spot during spring training and ultimately made the Opening Day roster .
The veteran outfielder appeared in 16 games with New York . He hit just .194/.212/.323 across 31 at-bats. While the Yankees surely appreciated having a veteran right-handed bat who can play multiple positions in the outfield, the team ended up designating him for assignment on Wednesday.
Grichuk, 34, has found success in the past. He hit at least 22 or more home runs in each season from 2016-2019 while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays . Grichuk is not the same player he once was but he still could catch the attention of teams in need of either right-handed hitting or outfield depth.
The Yankees, meanwhile, will move forward with a 20-10 overall record in 2026. New York currently holds a 1.5 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East standings.
As mentioned, the Yankees are set to play the Rangers on Wednesday. The ball club can earn a series sweep with a win, as they defeated the Rangers 4-2 on Monday and 3-2 on Tuesday. It has been a competitive series despite New York’s 2-0 lead.
First pitch for Wednesday afternoon’s Yankees-Rangers contest in Texas is scheduled for 2:35 PM EST as New York looks to continue playing well.
