There was a time that Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels was acknowledged as the best player in Major League Baseball. Trout had to give way to Shohei Ohtani when it came to that label and the Angels’ superstar has been troubled by both serious and nagging injuries for several years. However, Trout just had an MVP-like four-game series in New York against the Yankees .
Trout punished the Yankees by pounding 5 home runs in the series and going 6 for 16at the plate. Trout blasted his fifth home run in the series in Thursday’s 11-4 Angels victory over the Yankees. The two teams split the four games, and the Yankees needed ninth-inning rallies in their two victories or they could have found themselves on the wrong end of a four-game sweep.
Aaron Judge , Giancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice hit home runs in the series, and the series was notable for the long ball duel between Trout and Judge. Stanton acknowledged the duel and Trout’s ability to carry his team.
“It was just unreal,” Stanton said . “Cool showing from him and Judgey all series. Obviously we don’t want that against us, but you’ve got to acknowledge the greatness.”
The Yankees are in second place in the American League East with a 10-9 record. After a sharp start to the season, the Yankees have lost seven of their last 10 games. The Angels improved their record 10-10 with the triumph. They are just one-half game behind the Texas Rangers and the Athletics . Those two teams are tied for the AL West lead with 10-9 records.
