Veteran infielder Paul DeJong recently let the New York Yankees know that he would opt out of his contract if he did not receive a promotion to the MLB level by the end of March. On Friday, DeJong officially opted out of his deal , according to MLB insider Jon Heyman.
DeJong signed a minor league contract with the Yankees this past offseason. Through 23 games played at Triple-A in 2026, DeJong hit .203/.361/.516 across 23 games played. The infielder also hit six home runs.
While the idea of adding another veteran infielder to the MLB roster may have intrigued the Yankees, DeJong ultimately opted out of his deal on Friday. He will likely receive interest in free agency given his track record in MLB. The 32-year-old made his big league debut in 2017 and was an All-Star in 2019.
In other news, veteran outfielder Randall Grichuk was recently designated for assignment by the Yankees. Instead of accepting an outright assignment, Grichuk elected free agency on Friday , the Yankees announced.
Grichuk, 34, appeared in 16 games at the MLB level this season and hit .194/.212/.323 during that span. He is another player who could receive interest in free agency.
Meanwhile, the Yankees hold a 20-11 record heading into their game on Friday night against the Baltimore Orioles . New York leads the American League East by 1.5 games over the second place Tampa Bay Rays . It has been a successful campaign for the ball club up to this point. They will look to continue playing well this weekend against the O's.
First pitch for Friday night's game is scheduled for 7:05 PM EST in New York.
