It's been a rough start to the 2026 season for Ryan McMahon , as the New York Yankees ' third baseman has only recorded two hits out of 26 at-bats. While New York is winning games (8-3 to begin the campaign), McMahon is seemingly focused on breaking his slump.
The 31-year-old infielder admitted he is not happy about his slump to begin the year, according to Yankees Videos. McMahon is at least happy with the club winning games right now, but ultimately wants to improve his performances at the plate to help the team, instead of hurting them.
"If I knew, I don't think I'd be in the slow start," said McMahon. "I'm grinding. I'm not happy about it, I'm sure other people aren't. At the end of the day, it's about the team winning. I'll keep working and try to turn it around."
McMahon will have a chance to improve his .077 batting average on Thursday, when the Yankees take on the Athletics in the final matchup of a three-game series. He will be batting ninth in the order. The 2024 All-Star also owns a .273 OBP, while recording just two hits and two RBIs while drawing seven walks this season.
Luckily for Ryan McMahon , it's a long season ahead. He will have plenty of time to bounce back and provide some offense at the plate for the Yankees. It's hard to imagine manager Aaron Boone switching McMahon out anytime soon, as he is the best defensive option the club has at third base.
The Yankees initially acquired McMahon before the trade deadline in 2025. New York added McMahon to the roster to improve the third base position defensively for the playoff push last season. The front office dealt two top pitching prospects, Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz, to the Colorado Rockies for McMahon.
