It is mid-July in Kössen, an Austrian village on the edge of the Alps, close to the German border, at Nordsjælland's pre-season camp. The Danish Superliga club's coaching staff, including Michael Essien , are preparing for the new campaign, the stunning scenery par for the course. Every training session is recorded by a drone. The operator with the joystick in his hands? Well, that would be Caleb Yirenkyi , the Ghana midfielder who returned a week early from his post-World Cup break.
He requested to join his teammates in the drills, but after physios told the 20-year-old he required more rest Yirenkyi did the next best thing. It is a story that speaks volumes of his modest character and, a month on, he is poised to make his Premier League debut at Arsenal on Friday after Coventry made him their £26m record signing .
Months earlier, Frank Lampard discussed Yirenkyi with Essien, his former Chelsea teammate, and Coventry beat off competition from top-flight rivals to make him their player after Ghana's last-32 exit in the United States.

Yirenkyi's story is another triumph for Right to Dream (RTD), the academy umbrella that, via the Mansour Group, owns Nordsjælland. The club is based in Farum, north of Copenhagen, and developed Mohammed Kudus , Simon Adingra , Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ibrahim Osman . Mikkel Damsgaard and Patrick Dorgu progressed through Nordsjælland's youth programme and, in recent years, RTD opened hubs in Egypt and the US. "We are very excited to see a player go directly from the Superliga to the biggest league," says Alexander Riget, Nordsjælland's director of football. "Last year there were seven or eight players who were developed in our academy in the Premier League but most of them took a 'middle step' before playing – Adingra went on loan to Union Saint-Gilloise, Kudus went to Ajax, Damsgaard played in Italy [for Sampdoria] – but this is different."
Part of Yirenkyi's appeal is that he is a versatile performer. After making his first senior start in February 2025, he started every league game for which he was available until departing this month, missing just three matches, all through suspension. He is predominantly a central midfielder but has played at right-back for his country and ended his time at Nordsjælland as a left centre-back.
At the start of last year, he excelled in a 3-1 victory over Manchester United in Altrincham (in front of a crowd of 334) en route to the Premier League International Cup quarter-finals, a tournament for under-21 teams. In Toronto this summer, Yirenkyi's 95th-minute winner against Panama in Ghana's Group L opener, a goal set up by his now Coventry teammate Brandon Thomas-Asante , made him only the second Ghanaian man to score on his World Cup debut, after Haminu Draman.
Yirenkyi idolised Essien growing up and Essien's words of wisdom were priceless. "Sometimes I see some glimpses that remind me of myself when I was little," Essien said this year. Lampard sees those parallels himself and also shades of N'Golo Kanté's qualities; Yirenkyi won possession more times than any other player in the Superliga last season (205) and was crowned young player of the year.
Djimi Traoré , the former Liverpool defender, was another major influence. Traoré coached Yirenkyi at RTD in Ghana and quickly flagged his talent. Yirenkyi's biggest challenge was learning how to harness his power. He initially joined Nordsjælland's under-19s but regularly picked up yellow cards and was sometimes substituted to avoid the risk of reds. During a first-team camp in the Netherlands two years ago, Yirenkyi was pulled out of a training game because his desire to impose himself caused concerns he could injure key players a week before the new season.
Yirenkyi's time with RTD was transformative. Born in the town of Bechem, he joined RTD in Kumasi aged nine and arrived in Denmark aged 18 from their academy hub in eastern Ghana, about two hours from Accra, the capital. Riget was Nordsjælland under-13s coach when he first came across Yirenkyi in Ghana. "At that point he was not one where you thought: 'OK, he's the next superstar,' like you did with Kudus. He was a very disciplined student and it was not clear that he would be a professional footballer. At that time, Caleb was also very good at building robots."

Robots? Yirenkyi spent his free time studying robotics, an extracurricular activity while enrolled on RTD's programme, which provides a pathway into football or further education scholarships. Such was Yirenkyi's focus, teachers had to remind him to take a break. He won a national prize as a 13-year-old and only the Covid-19 pandemic prevented him from competing in the world championships in the US. After joining Coventry, he was asked what he would do if he were not a footballer? "I'd build robots," came the reply. Flying the drone this summer, then, was a doddle.
Coventry have signed Yirenkyi for his ability on the pitch but his personality off it is equally endearing. "He is a guy for whom actions speak louder than words," says Riget of a quiet, low-maintenance and introverted individual. On the morning after Coventry finalised a deal that would increase his salary about twentyfold, Yirenkyi was his usual self with teammates at breakfast. Three days earlier, in his final game for Nordsjælland, he was anything but winding down. "When players make these kinds of moves it can affect them a little, but we had a game against Randers where he was tackling with his head on the ground," Riget says.
There are plenty of tales that speak to Yirenkyi's humility. While in Denmark, he stayed in Farum during the off-season to achieve peak condition, and in 2024 he spent Christmas Eve with the family of the transitions coach, Thomas Kristensen, a former Denmark midfielder. "They had 26 guests at their house and Caleb was number 27," says Riget. "Thomas's grandmother is 85 but because of Caleb she watched every FC Nordsjælland game and now she will follow him at Coventry."
Yirenkyi was always last to leave the dressing room, last off the team bus, only doing so after making sure he and his teammates left no trace; Coventry's kit staff already appreciate his help gathering loose balls at the end of sessions. "He has been a joy to work with in this short time," Lampard said. "I think there is going to be a big, big uplift in this boy … we believe he is going to have a really good career."
When Yirenkyi signed for Nordsjælland, he lived in one of 34 rooms on the club's campus but, unlike most players who move out after a few months, he stayed until joining Coventry. "He just wanted to stay, use his bicycle and be a professional footballer," says Riget. "Normally when players leave, we need to help them. But when our operations team went into Caleb's room, it was empty, absolutely spotless and he had left flowers and a card. He is a special character, for sure."
