The New York Jets head into their first divisional game of the season next Sunday feeling good about themselves. So far this season, they've played tough against three top teams in Green Bay, Detroit and Cleveland.
We won't bring up the Chicago Bears debacle.
Today, Gang Green won a tough one in terrible weather conditions, beating the Cleveland Browns by 17-12. The game was fought to the last play, and truly was one of those games that could have gone either way. Fortunately for Jets fans, who are so used to strange things happening in these kind of games, that didn't happen here.
There were many heroes and few zeroes in this team game. Here's the bottom line for the Week 5 report card:
AARON GLENN: (A)Once again his defense held an opponent under 200 yards of offense. Keep that up and you'll win a lot more games.
FRANK REICH (A) He made the call of the game in the fourth quarter, sending Braelon Allen barreling through the left side for a 22-yard touchdown.
DAVID BAILEY (A) If he doesn't get the AFC Defensive Player of the Week Award, some other player must have had a game for the ages. Bailey had three sacks, four quarterback hits, and probably sold hot dogs during halftime in his most complete game as a pro.
GENO SMITH: (B) Navigated his team through tough conditions and his lone mistake (a fumble) wasn't really his fault, as a Browns rusher came free.
GARRETT WILSON: (B)Caught seven passes for 104 yards, including a first-quarter touchdown, a score that loomed large as the weather worsened.
JARVIS BROWNLEE JR: (A)His status was uncertain for this game because of the NFL concussion protocol. But he played and delivered a helluva game, as Aaron Glenn showed the confidence to keep sending Brownlee after Watson. His stat line showed six tackles, a sack, a quarterback hit and two thrown for losses.
DARRELL JACKSON JR. (A)The big rookie had back-to-back passes batted down, a sack and a quarterback hit. He played a huge role when edge Joseph Ossai limped off with an ankle injury. He may play a bigger role coming up for a Jets line that is beset by injuries.
JASON SANDERS: (A)He came back from a missed extra point against Chicago to come through with a key 54-yard field goal and two extra points on a day that was tough on kickers.
