New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown spoke about why he is excited despite the team's poor start to the season.
The reigning champion New York Knicks have lost more than they have won to start the 2026-27 NBA season. The team is 3-4 after seven games, and has been struggling against Eastern Conference opposition to start the year.
Jalen Brunson is averaging his lowest points tally since his debut season in New York. There have been some defensive issues as well. While fans of the Knicks have a lot of patience this year following their championship win last season, head coach Mike Brown is 'excited' by the tough start.
Mike Brown says Knicks' struggles can help them 'get on track' sooner after summer of celebration
Bringing an NBA championship to New York for the first time since the 1970s was an incredible achievement for this group. They have been celebrated for it endlessly since, with Josh Hart speaking recently about the team needing to snap out of that.
Brown echoed a similar sentiment when talking about the team's struggles, explaining that this reality check can help them get their heads back into the game after the summer.
"Everything can get better… I'm not p***** about the start or upset about the start," Brown said. "There's a part of me… I'm a little excited that we're struggling. I want to see if we right now, can figure it out.
"When you go through the offseason that we went through, everybody celebrates you the way that this lovely city did and the fans of the New York Knicks did, you want to be shaken and brought back to earth right away when the season starts because that grounds you.
"Right now because we're not playing our best basketball, we're seeing some of the challenges that we need to work on. Right now we could be winning games, but it could be false reality."
This makes some sense but it will only work if the Knicks do eventually start winning games this season. It is not unheard of for championship teams to drastically fall off the next season. Brown and the Knicks have to work to ensure their fate does not befall them.
