On international ice flooded with superstars past and present, young Bruins forward Fraser Minten was named player of the game in Canada’s 5-3 win over Sweden to open the IIHF World Championships.
Minten had a pair of assists, including on Connor Brown ’s game-winner 3:21 into the third period. The center drove to the net, carrying defenders with him, then dropped the puck back for Porter Martone, who found an open Brown for a tic-tac-toe go-ahead goal.
Knotted 3-3 after two periods, Canada found another gear in the final frame thanks to Minten and company.
“We got better as the game went on,” Canadian goalie Jet Greaves said in Switzerland, via IIHF. “We did a good job in the third period and we’re excited to get the three points against a really good team. We have a lot of respect for (Sweden) and know how many great players they have. But now we have to keep our foot on the gas.”
Still 21 years old, Minten is coming off a strong first full season in Boston . The center scored 17 goals and added 18 assists while displaying strong two-way play beyond his years. He’s a native of Vancouver .
