The Kansas City Royals finished the 2026 season at 69-93 and in last place in the American League Central, 16 games behind the Guardians, so most of the good news this fall is coming from the farm system.
One player to watch is outfielder Zion Rose, the sixth overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft out of Louisville, who is now playing for the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League.

A First Look in High-A
Rose was ranked as the No. 30 prospect in the draft class by MLB Pipeline and was usually projected to go in the 20s in mock drafts, so going at No. 6 in July was earlier than most expected.
Kansas City signed him for $5,809,575, which was below the $7,746,100 slot value for the pick.
After signing, the Royals sent Rose to High-A Quad Cities, where he made contact on 78 percent of his swings and struck out 17.8 percent of the time over 19 regular-season games.
The problem was what happened after contact, as 45.6 percent of his batted balls went on the ground and he finished with a .338 slugging percentage.

Rose talked about how the team handled those first few weeks in a recent interview about his fall assignment .
"The Royals did a great job [of] letting me settle in before they attacked anything that I had going on," Rose said.
"Of course, we all have things we have to get better at, and now they're starting to give me things to work on. But they really did a good job of building me up, allowing me to come into the program, allowing me to get adjusted, be in a new environment. I believe soon they'll have things that they want me to work on for sure, but I trust their plan."
Why the Fall League Fits Rose
That is the right way to handle a player who missed time to ankle and hamstring injuries during his junior season at Louisville.

When healthy in the spring, Rose hit .417 with an 8.7 percent strikeout rate over 173 plate appearances, so he already knows how to put the bat on the ball.
Now he has to lift it and drive it with more power, and that work starts in Arizona.
He is also still learning the outfield after catching early in his college career.
Rose is one of only two 2026 draft picks in this year's Fall League, and that tells me the front office believes in him the same way it believes in a young catcher worth building around .
Through his first two Fall League games, he went 1-for-4 with a triple and two walks against Scottsdale and 1-for-5 with a stolen base against Glendale.

What It Means for Kansas City
After 93 losses, the Royals need young talent to show up soon.
They already have a shortstop nominated for a major award , but the lineup needs more power around him.
A strong fall would put Rose in a good spot heading into spring training, where the club will also lean on a starter who earned his manager's praise late this season.
I like the patient plan he described, because a hitter with his contact skills does not need to be rushed.
