The offseason for the Cleveland Cavaliers has already been an eventful one, and the NBA season isn't even over yet.
Cleveland fired head coach J.B. Bickerstaff last Thursday, putting the pressures of the franchise's success on Koby Altman, the team's president of basketball operations.
Up next is making a handful of critical roster decisions. Chief among them is trying to convince star guard Donovan Mitchell to sign a long-term contract.
But the Cavs could try and rebuild their roster by trading away players from the starting lineup. They should, at least according to a new post by ESPN on Monday (subscription required) .
ESPN senior NBA writer Chris Herring asserts that the Cavs should trade starting point guard Darius Garland and starting center Jarrett Allen this offseason.
Herring doesn't suggest what the Cavs should get in return for Garland, instead hyping up the 24-year-old guard's ability as a 3-point shooter and a passer.
The Spurs do have two picks in the top 10 of the draft this year, as well as two extra first-round picks in 2025 and 2027. After this year, the Cavs don't have a first-round picks in those years because of the Mitchell trade .
Herring also thinks the Washington Wizards should trade for Allen, a former All-Star with the Cavs.
Again, Herring doesn't have an answer on what the Cavs would get in return, but suggests Washington would have to give up draft picks.
Expect this sort of speculation to continue at least until the NBA draft on June 26 as the Cavs figure out the future of the roster and how it can work under the league's luxury tax thresholds.
